Laser Dentistry
The laser has become one of the safest, most convenient and versatile tools in all of dentistry. In fact, there are very few procedures in cosmetic, functional, or neuromuscular dentistry that do not benefit from laser technology to some degree. There are many benefits to using a laser that did not exist with older technologies. Here are a few:
• Lasers help blood clotting, which minimizes blood loss
• Lasers kill bacteria and other organisms in and around the area being operated on
• Microscopic accuracy and microscopic detection abilities
• Many surgical procedures can now be done without stitches or anesthesia
• Cavities can be treated with no drill and no local anesthetic
• Many procedures are now less-invasive, meaning quicker recovery time.
Procedures
The list of procedures that have benefited from dental lasers is too long to list here. However, we use dental lasers most often during the following procedures:
Periodontics – Many gum-related procedures benefit from laser technology. Almost any gum surgery that used to require a scalpel can now be done with lasers – often requiring no sutures.
Gum Reshaping and Crown Lengthening - “Gummy” smiles can be reduced through removal of excess gum and bone tissue.
Diagnodent - Lasers can be used to detect hard-to-find cavities before they get the chance to spread. It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of cavities – particularly “pit and valley” cavities – go undetected by conventional detection techniques.
Tooth Whitening - Lasers can be used to activate the bleaching gels used in teeth whitening procedures.
Laser Curing – Lasers can be used to cure the bonding material during Dental Bonding procedures.
Dental Fillings – Many fillings can be treated without a drill or needles.
Lasers have also proven helpful in the treatment of tissue overgrowth which often causes sleep apnea, snoring, and other airway-restrictions. Some TMD sufferers also benefit from laser treatments. Lasers may also be used to treat tooth sensitivity.
